Published in the esteemed journal Sexologies, this groundbreaking study was conducted by two researchers from New H Medical, a private gynecology clinic in New York. They delved into the world of female orgasms by examining blood flow in the clitoris before and after sex in five different positions.
The positions under scrutiny included face-to-face with the woman on top, face-to-face sitting, face-to-face with the man on top (with and without a pillow), and kneeling/rear entry (also known as doggy style).
Here’s what they discovered: every position, except kneeling/rear entry, increased clitoral blood flow. But the winner, the position that truly set the clitoris on fire, was the face-to-face/male on top position (aka missionary) with the added bonus of a pillow under the woman’s pelvis.
Now, before we get too carried away, let’s address a few caveats. It’s important to note that this study only involved one heterosexual couple, so we can’t say for certain if these results apply to everyone. The couple in question were a healthy, 32-year-old medical doctor duo who were well-acquainted with the researchers. While it may not be the typical scenario for most people, who are not being observed by scientists during intimate moments, to each their own!
Furthermore, it’s worth mentioning that the study focused on clitoral blood flow as an indicator of sexual arousal, rather than whether an orgasm was actually achieved. However, similar findings have been reported in larger studies. In a 2020 paper that surveyed nearly 20,000 Czech heterosexual individuals about their preferred sexual positions, face-to-face positions came out on top. Interestingly, the favorite position overall was face-to-face with the woman on top.
