The Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida, boldly took a stand by enjoying sashimi made from fish caught off the coast of Fukushima, proving its safety.
Despite the controversy surrounding the release of treated water, experts have deemed it completely safe. To dispel any doubts, Kishida and three cabinet ministers savored a delightful seafood feast on Wednesday, featuring flounder, octopus, and seabass caught off the coast of Fukushima.
Now, you might think this situation resembles the infamous Two Cars in Every Garage and Three Eyes on Every Fish episode of The Simpsons, where Mr. Burns attempts to eat a three-eyed fish from a contaminated lake. However, rest assured, Kishida is not in any danger.
Following the reactor meltdown, the contaminated water, amounting to 1.3 million tons, was stored on-site. This water has undergone treatment using the Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS), which effectively removes radioactivity through a series of chemical reactions. By the end of this process, most of the contamination is eliminated.
Although they cannot eliminate tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen, from the water due to current technological limitations, it’s important to note that tritium occurs naturally in our atmosphere and rain. Moreover, the concentration of tritium in the Pacific Ocean is higher than in Fukushima’s wastewater.
