Odor Fatigue: The Mystery Behind the Inability to Detect Your Own Scent

Step into a world filled with scents – from the overpowering stench of BO in a gym changing room to the refreshing minty breath of a passerby. Humans may not have the olfactory prowess of certain animals, but our sense of smell is more impressive than you might think. In fact, a fascinating 2014 study revealed that we can discern over a trillion different smells.

However, even with our remarkable noses, we can become desensitized to specific scents. This phenomenon, known as odor fatigue, occurs when our sense of smell becomes exhausted from constantly detecting familiar odors.

There have been intriguing studies where individuals placed air fresheners in their rooms, only to find that after a few days, they could no longer detect the tropical summer breeze scent.

“What seems to happen in long-term adaptation is that the receptors that would normally respond to these smells almost turn off after being bombarded for a few weeks,” explained Pamela Dalton, a psychologist at the Monell Chemical Senses Center, in a 2016 interview with the Washington Post.

Unlike our vision or hearing, our sense of smell takes longer to recover sensitivity. It can take two or three weeks to regain our ability to detect certain scents, making this phenomenon truly unique.

While there are instances when we can smell ourselves, it usually occurs when there is a significant change in our body odor. For example, after a particularly sweaty day, you may catch a whiff of your own BO. However, it’s important to note that if you can smell yourself, others nearby will likely find the odor even more potent.

The exact reasons behind nose blindness in humans remain unclear. However, there are ways to combat this phenomenon and regain your ability to smell yourself. You can try smelling your clothes away from your body, running clean hands along your scalp and smelling your fingertips, or even performing breath tests like the classic hand test (where you hold your hand up to your face and take a good sniff).

Alternatively, if you have close and trusted friends, you can always ask them for an honest assessment of your scent.
