Celebrate Laboratory Science at Pittcon

Discover the Fascinating Origins of Pittcon

Step back in time to the late 1940s in Pittsburgh, where the foundations of Pittcon were laid. This vibrant city was a hub of industry, producing everything from raw materials to finished products. Amidst this bustling trade center, two scientific societies emerged: the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh (SSP) and the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh (SACP). Their mission was to test and validate these innovative products.

Recognizing their shared goals, these societies joined forces and merged their annual symposia, giving birth to the first Pittsburgh Conference in Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy in 1950. With 800 attendees and 14 exhibitors, Pittcon made its debut and showcased the latest laboratory equipment at its annual conferences until it relocated to Ohio in 1968.

In 1988, Pittcon transformed into a dynamic “roadshow,” changing host cities almost every year.

Since then, Pittcon has experienced tremendous growth. In 2023’s event, it featured over 1,100 technical sessions, 450 exhibitors, and attracted more than 15,000 attendees. While it has evolved, Pittcon remains true to its roots, fostering knowledge, careers, research, and scientific endeavors.

Whether you’re involved in day-to-day sample preparation or seeking new equipment for your team, Pittcon is the event for you. It caters to professionals at all stages of their careers.

Immerse Yourself in a World of Learning

Pittcon offers an immersive and captivating experience. The exhibition showcases cutting-edge technology and intricate demonstrations, providing attendees with a nuanced exploration of the latest advancements. Engage in profound discussions and delve into the complexities of laboratory challenges.

The conference is thoughtfully organized into different tracks such as Bioanalytics & Life Sciences, Cannabis & Psychedelics, Energy & Environmental, Instrumentation & Nanoscience, Pharmaceutical & Biological, and Professional Development. With a wide range of topics, there’s something for everyone.

Attendees can also participate in various short courses that cover these tracks. The Professional Development courses are particularly valuable for early-career scientists, focusing on leadership, soft skills, career navigation, and communication.

Throughout the event, numerous opportunities for intellectual exchange and networking will arise. From formal networking roundtables and workshops to the convivial atmosphere of the Pittcon Party, where hors d’oeuvres are enjoyed, these interactions foster collaboration and discussions on workplace challenges.

Pittcon’s Philanthropic Commitment

Pittcon takes pride in its strong philanthropic commitment. Over 90 percent of the conference’s net profit is dedicated to supporting science education and outreach. These funds contribute to primary and secondary education, scholarships, grants, laboratory enhancements, and outreach activities.

Neal Dando, Pittcon’s 2021 President and the current Special Projects Chair, emphasizes the importance of igniting children’s interest in science through hands-on experiences. Grants like those provided by Pittcon enable teachers to equip students with the necessary tools and inspire them to pursue scientific fields.

One grateful recipient of Pittcon’s support is Jordan Booth, Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Pittsburgh Greensburg Campus. With a small equipment grant, Booth was able to replace outdated spectrophotometers, enhancing the learning experience for students across various courses.

Pittcon not only benefits current scientists but also invests in the future of education. By attending this event, you contribute to this noble cause.
