NASA’s STEREO-A spacecraft completes inaugural Earth flyby after 17 years

Get ready for an exciting event! On August 12, 2023, NASA’s STEREO-A spacecraft will make its first Earth flyby after nearly 17 years in space. This milestone brings a unique opportunity for the spacecraft to collaborate with other NASA missions near Earth and uncover new insights about our closest star, the sun.

The STEREO mission, consisting of twin spacecraft STEREO-A and STEREO-B, was launched on October 25, 2006, from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. While STEREO-B lagged behind, STEREO-A took the lead, both orbiting the sun in Earth-like paths.
