Remember those classic screensavers we all had a favorite? Whether it was the bouncing blobs or the wriggling squiggly line, they were a staple of our computer screens.
While screensavers are still around today, they no longer serve their original purpose. They used to save our screens from burn-in, a phenomenon where leaving the same image on a CRT monitor or TV for too long would permanently etch it onto the screen.
But why did we need screensavers in the first place? Well, back in the day, if you left your TV on overnight, you could wake up to a ghostly display card burned into the screen. It was a real hassle.
Nowadays, screensavers are more of a novelty than a necessity. They may not save our screens anymore, but they still have their uses. For example, they can help keep prying eyes away from what you’re working on.
