Urologist Reveals Incorrect Urination Habits Among American Men

Did you know that sitting down to pee might actually be better for men? According to a recent survey conducted by YouGov, a significant number of men never sit down to pee. The survey, which analyzed data from 13 countries, revealed some interesting differences between countries. For example, there is a nearly 40 percent gap between the United States and Germany in terms of men who sit down to pee most or every time they need to go.

In the United States, only 10 percent of men said they always sit down to pee, while 31 percent said they never do and 17 percent said they rarely do. Interestingly, younger men were more likely to sit down to pee compared to older men.

On the other hand, in Germany, most men said they prefer to pee sitting down. In fact, there is even a term in German, “sitzpinkler,” which literally means someone who sits down to pee. It seems that sitting down to pee is the norm in Germany.

So, what’s the verdict? According to a urologist interviewed by the Telegraph, sitting down is actually better for men. Not only is it more hygienic (ever noticed how there’s less splashing when you place a hose in a bucket rather than waving it around like a lasso from a great height?), but it also helps empty the bladder more efficiently.

The urologist explained that when you stand, the muscles in your pelvis are tense, but when you sit down, they relax, making urination faster and easier. This is particularly beneficial for men as they age and may develop enlarged prostates, which can lead to problems like urinary tract infections and bladder stones.

Studies have even shown that sitting down to pee can improve urinary flow in men with enlarged prostates. So, while sitting down may be mainly beneficial for men with this condition, considering that over 90 percent of men in their 80s have enlarged prostates, it might be worth getting used to sitting down while you’re still young.

Next time you need to go, maybe give sitting down a try. Who knows, it might just be the healthier option!
