Heartbreaking Image of Elephant Revealed in Sneak Peek of Wildlife Photographer of the Year

Prepare to be captivated by the stunning images showcased by the NHM. One particularly heart-wrenching photograph reveals the devastating aftermath of a train collision with an elephant in Gabon. The poor creature’s hip was irreparably shattered, leading to its tragic demise. Shockingly, this is just one of the 20 elephants that are struck by trains in Lopé National Park each year. These trains, rushing to transport manganese from the Moanda mine, which holds a staggering 25 percent of the world’s known reserves, pose a significant threat to the local wildlife.

Mark your calendars for October 10, 2023, when the winners of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition will be announced at a prestigious awards ceremony. A panel of international judges will evaluate the images based on their creativity, originality, and technical excellence.

Don’t miss the chance to witness a curated collection of 100 winning images at the NHM’s exhibition starting on October 13. Following its showcase in London, this captivating display will embark on a national and international tour, so keep your eyes peeled for its arrival in a city near you.

Now in its 59th year, the competition has attracted an astounding 50,000 entries from 95 countries across the globe.
